Precision turning is an important part of the manufacturing process. It rotates the workpiece so it can come into contact with the cutting tool. The rotating motion created by the turning process forces the workpiece’s material to be stripped away by the cutting tool. This tool can be moved in a number of directions: parallel or perpendicular to the spinning workpiece, or in a linear fashion. The shape and motion of the cutting tool determine how the workpiece will look, what cuts are made, and what shape they will take.
Turning is an integral process in precision CNC shops like ours. With our focus on being flexible for our customers’ needs and placing quality above all else, precision turning is key to stellar manufacturing jobs.
Equipment Used in the Precision Turning Process
Turning is primarily used to produce cylindrical and conical surfaces, because radial symmetry can be achieved using this process.
Lathes are what is commonly used in turning, but CNC machining shops like ours utilize equipment that can perform multiple operations like 5-axis machining centers and mill/turn centers. The lathes in these machines don’t just do turning, they also carry out other machining processes such as reaming, boring, and facing. CNC operators then set the parameters in the machines which ensure greater precision, and the opportunity to correct defects early in the manufacturing process.
